Members of the Scarsdale Police Department were dispatched to the intersection of Popham Road and Scarsdale Avenue shortly after 10 p.m. on Oct. 16, where there was a reported one-vehicle crash.
Upon arrival at the scene of the crash, responding officers spoke with the driver, Scarsdale resident Sunil Dhuri, 52, who stated that he was traveling east on Popham Road, approaching the intersection of Scarsdale Avenue when he missed the traffic light and struck a utility pole.
According to police, “it was clear that Dhuri had been drinking alcoholic beverages due to his glassy and bloodshot eye, incoherent and slurred speech, his movement was lethargic and there was the strong odor of alcohol on his breath.” Dhuri proceeded to fail multiple Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and refused to submit to a breathalyzer test. One empty bottle of alcohol and one half-empty bottle was also recovered from his Toyota Celica.
Dhuri was arrested and again to refused to submit to a breathalyzer at Scarsdale Police Headquarters. He was charged with a felony count of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction and cited for refusing to take a breath test. Dhuri was released after his arrest was processed and he is scheduled to appear in Scarsdale Village Court on Oct. 24 to answer the DWI charge.
